Our Behavior Specialist will provide support to teachers, teaching assistants, administrators, other school personnel and families to implement effective, evidence-based interventions for students with disabilities in the Minnick Schools. Minnick Schools is a private special education day school for students with disabilities licensed by the Virginia Board of Education.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, REQUIREMENTS AND PREREQUISITES

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in human services, education, or related field.
  • Working toward or eligible to sit for board certification in behavior analysis; Obtaining the BCBA credential within one year from date of hire is required to maintain employment as a Behavior Specialist.
  • Expertise in the field and knowledge of ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), experience working in a school setting is preferred.
  • Experience in teaching or providing behavioral and academic support to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to cultivate teamwork and foster staff professional development and competency.
  • Minimum six months of experience working with individuals with Autism, Developmental Disability (DD), Intellectual disability (ID) and/or Emotional Disability (ED).
  • Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, parents, community members, and staff members.
  • Adherence to high level of professional and ethical standards.
  • Valid Virginia Drivers’ License and proof of insurance if assigned as a driver.
  • Satisfactory driving record in accordance with agency standards if assigned as a driver.
  • Ability to organize work effectively.
  • Ability to maintain records, prepare reports and required paperwork according to agency requirements on a timely basis.
  • Basic computer skills and experience working with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to observe health and safety regulations.
  • Must be able to participate in and be certified in crisis de-escalation techniques and certified in First Aid and CPR.
  • Perform physical management of students.
  • Serve as a mandated reporter.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions: May be required to perform any of the following duties:

  • Deliver consultation and training pertaining to the use of evidence-based strategies through in-services, workshops, technical assistance, and coaching.
  • Assist with the implementation of competency-based staff training.
  • Assist in the completion of functional behavior assessments (FBAs) and the development of behavior intervention plans (BIPs) under the supervision of the Supervisor of Behavior Analytic Programming.
  • Assist in training staff on implementation of behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and providing follow up monitoring to ensure fidelity of implementation under the supervision of the Supervisor of Behavior Analytic Programming.
  • Review incident reports as requested.
  • Assist teachers in conducting skill assessments and selecting IEP goals based on assessment results.
  • Collaborate with teachers to select evidence-based teaching strategies for IEP goals and other skills targeted for acquisition and to develop teaching materials.
  • Review and provide feedback on skill acquisition plans for IEP goals and other skills targeted for acquisition.
  • Assist teachers in developing data collection systems, and in collecting, graphing, and analyzing data.
  • Attend regularly scheduled classroom meetings to discuss student programming and student data.
  • Review student IEP progress monitoring forms and behavior data summaries for accuracy as requested.
  • Participate in IEP meetings as requested.
  • Participate in planning meetings to assess needs, set short- and long-term goals, identify barriers to implementation, and assess progress.
  • Assist with the implementation of school-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) as assigned.
  • Report all student injuries, accidents, and illnesses to the administrator of the school immediately or as soon as is reasonably possible.
  • Serve as a mandated reporter for suspicions of child endangerment, neglect, or abuse.
  • Maintain and respect confidentiality of student and school personnel information.
  • Perform duties as assigned by Principal/Educational Coordinator and Supervisor of Behavior Analytic Programming.
  • Perform related duties and other duties as assigned.
