Job Description

ECU is seeking a female academic aspiring to be a member of the teaching and research team at a university recognised internationally for its excellent quality of education and research and has a particular focus on environmental sustainability in its engineering teaching and research programs.

The application process for Athena SWAN accreditation identified areas of priority for the university which included recruitment of women in the areas of STEM. With participation rates for female academics in STEM at 24%, and only 4% in the School of Engineering in 2017, the School of Engineering set targets and committed to strategies that would increase female staff academic numbers within the school and address the gender imbalance. The School successfully met its first target of 12% in December 2019 and continues to participate in university initiatives to improve gender balance in Engineering.

The School of Engineering at Edith Cowan University (ECU) was established in 1992. It has been one of the fastest growing engineering schools in the nation with a strong track record of success in developing and delivering quality undergraduate and postgraduate engineering programs that have strong alignment with industry and promote community and environmental sustainability. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in chemical, civil, civil and environmental, mechanical, mechatronics, electrical power, electrical and renewable energy, electronics and communications, instrumentation control and automation, computer systems, petroleum, and maritime engineering. ECU has been ranked in the Top 151-175 in the 2022 Times Higher Education World University Rankings for engineering and technology. Furthermore, Engineering at ECU has been rated as above world standard in the 2018 Excellence in Research for Australia evaluation by the Australia Research Council. The School provides a supportive and collegial work environment and enjoys outstanding teaching and research facilities that are among the best in Australia.

In the Discipline of Civil Engineering, the School offers a broad range of undergraduate, postgraduate by coursework and higher degrees by research programs. The School is now seeking to appoint a candidate who can make a significant contribution to the School’s world-class research and teaching activities. The successful applicant will have a strong track record in research and teaching in civil engineering with a focus on geotechnical engineering. Industry experience in geotechnical engineering will be an advantage. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to leverage on the unique and world-class research facilities towards industry collaboration and high impact research outcomes. A capital seed funding of up to $50,000 may be provided to the successful applicant to help establish her research activities at ECU.
