Optical Engineer Design and Analyses (m/f/d)

Your main task as technical supply manager will be to coordinate and tech- nically drive the external development of optical subsystems for present and future European and global space projects. In this role you shall be responsible for the technical interface to technical managers in house, customers and subcontractors for the relevant project. In your role, you shall closely cooperate with other technical disciplines (structural, ther- mal, mechanical, AIT, systems engineering). Furthermore, in your role as optical engineer you will be involved in optical system design, analysis, realization and verification. At OHB you will experience thrilling working conditions and a profes- sional environment in flagship institutional space programs of ESA and DLR, as well as in commercial New Space programs.

Your Tasks

– Responsible for the design and development of optical systems and products for present and future European and German space missions
– Conduction of the optical design, analysis and tolerancing from early concept to the final product
– Definition and conduction of trade studies to suggest principal optical design choices and drive design decisions
– Derivation of technical requirements for optical systems, subsystems and components
– Definition of optical verification methods, integration and alignment strategies, and establishment of error and performance budgets
– Information exchange with customers and subcontractors at the technical level
– Close cooperation with other technical disciplines (mechanical design, thermal & structural engineering, systems engineering, Assembly Integration & Test)

Your Qualifications

– University degree or equivalent qualification in optics, physics, engineering or related technical discipline with several years of professional experience
– Sound knowledge in the field of optics with advanced expertise in conceptual optical design, simulation, tolerancing and analysis (including straylight analysis), especially in the field of imaging systems, telescopes, spectrometers and interferometers (both refractive and reflective)
– Experience with optical design software (e.g. ZEMAX, Code V, ASAP)
– Experience in the interface to relevant engineering disciplines as mechanical, structural and thermal engineering
– Excellent interpersonal, oral & written communication skills, with the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural and multi-language team
– Ability to quickly establish rapport, build trust, and develop excellent working relationships with other team members, customers and vendors
– System and process-oriented thinking
– Excellent English skills, both written and verbal

Optional Skills

– Experience in space-flight industry, preferably with ESA or DLR projects
– Technical coordination of a team of optical engineers within a project
– Good programming skills (Python, Matlab)
– German language skills
