Job Description:
POSITION SUMMARY
The Controls Engineer II plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of electrical control systems, equipment, and machinery. This position also devises new approaches to problems encountered. This position is also responsible for the installation and technical support of PLC-based hardware and software.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs, plans, and schedules control systems development, including both hardware and software systems, for new/existing machines, options or configurations.
  • Performs all duties of an Engineer I in a professional and competent manner.
  • Creates and customizes control system designs and develops recurring cost estimates.
  • Designs, performs and leads proof-of-technology tests; analyzes and correlates data; prepares reports and makes recommendations.
  • Develops Engineering schematics and/or drawings (using company standards and tools) including Bills of Materials (BOMs). Ensures that documentation is clear, complete, accurate and compliant with appropriate company standards.
  • Performs machine/process risk assessments.
  • Participates in or leads multi-discipline teams addressing specific design or process issues.
  • Develops and tests PLC and HMI code, as described by UML guidelines.
  • Installs PLC and HMI code and tests machines at our production facility prior to shipment.
  • Prepares and updates machine manuals, as required.
  • Performs continuous improvement/cost reductions on machines and options.
  • Performs machine quality inspections prior to machine shipments. Generates documentation to support quality compliance programs.
  • Proposes and implements tools/processes to improve overall company efficiency.
  • Participates in R&D projects (under guidance of senior-level Engineers).
  • Participates in sales meetings to describe product-related issues and ongoing work.
  • Participates in customer meetings to discuss specific machine layouts, performance, specifications, etc.
  • Trains other Control Engineers and Field Service Technicians in all aspects of the machine; transfers knowledge/release process to other members of the Engineering department.
  • Assists with machine installation, commissioning, field troubleshooting, and customer training, as required.
  • Becomes familiar with all safety and “best-practices” codes and guidelines (OSHA, CE, NFPA, etc.)
  • Becomes familiar with all company safety standards.
  • Performs all commitments/tasks in a timely and professional manner.
  • Performs other duties/responsibilities as required.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education
  • BSEE or BSET (Electrical Emphasis) plus appropriate job-related continuing education or experience in an OEM environment.
  • EIT Certification Preferred, however this is not required and will not disqualify
Experience and Skills
  • 5+ years of PLC / Controls programming experience; working at OEM is preferred not required; sufficient experience to be considered fully competent.
  • Experience with robot controllers is desired.
  • In-depth knowledge of controls engineering and a broad working knowledge of mechanical engineering.
  • Experience in the following software packages is required
  • PLC and HMI platforms (Allen Bradley, Siemens and Visual Basic)
  • Electrical schematic design software (ePLAN and PromisE)
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Beginning ServoMotion controls (Yaskawa, Siemens, Allen-Bradley, etc.)
  • Higher Level Programming Language (VB.net, C++, etc.)
  • Able to apply theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and current technology to create new software or to improve existing software.
  • Possesses a wide range of creativity in the application of standard and more-advanced engineering activities; exercises sound judgment in selecting and adapting engineering alternatives.
  • Possesses good communication skills, a positive “get-it-done” attitude, and the ability to work as part of a team in a demanding production environment.

  • Communicate effectively (visually and verbally) with internal and external contacts.
  • Meet requirements of daily attendance on job for a full, continuous work schedule.
The approximate pay range for this position is $66,480 – $99,720. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Final compensation may vary based on factors including but not limited to background, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as geographic location of the position.
