An opportunity is available for an Estimator to join a Tayside based Main Contractor.

This is a fantastic chance to work with one of Scotland’s top names in construction.

Main purpose of job

Responsible for the compilation of competitive tender offers, the ultimate objective of which is to secure workload and maintain a constant work-stream which will result in a positive contribution to the Company’s overhead and profit account.

Key tasks

  • To prepare tender enquiry Appraisals.
  • Receiving hard copy/ digital transfer/downloads and processing all enquiries and tender documentation into the prescribed format for the compilation of competitive bids, encompassing traditional procurement or design & build formats.
  • Maintaining and updating the Subcontractor Database.
  • Analysing tender documentation and assessing / highlighting risk factors.
  • Co-ordinating quality and price components and ensuring Site Visit Reports, Tender-Stage Programmes and Quality Submissions are suitably allocated and compiled to comply with pre-set timetables.
  • Maintaining and updating the Causeway System generally and specifically its library of measured rates.
  • Co-ordinating the transfer of information to and from external consultants engaged for billing purposes on design & build tenders.
  • Receiving, analysing and cleansing quotations from specialist subcontractors to identify shortfalls and exclude or highlight risk, and entering selected information into Causeway for comparative purposes.
  • Accurately pricing measured sections utilising the Causeway System.
  • Liaise with suppliers and subcontractors at tender stage to obtain the most competitive prices ensuring firm quotes are received for materials and subcontract items to support the best net estimate.
  • Co-ordinating and compiling main contract bids, encompassing preliminaries, measured works, sums, selected subcontractor quotations and qualifications.
  • Preparing final reports, attending Tender Review Meetings with senior management and ensuring any and all amendments arising are properly incorporated into offers and bids.
  • Ensuring that all tender returns are compliant and submitted timeously.
  • Co-ordinating all post-tender queries in conjunction with senior management.
  • To arrange handover meetings and formally hand-over new contracts.
  • Price Joiner work, Builders work and Groundworks from first principles
  • Procurement of subs/materials quotes & main contractor’s Prelims.
  • Take ownership with tenders from receiving the documents through to adjudication of tenders.
  • Assist in the training of estimating staff and trainees/graduates working in the department.
  • Run multiple projects at any one time at different stages.
  • Good construction technology knowledge.
  • Database management.
  • Assessment and recording of the likely competition when tendering.
  • Issue and action tender queries.
  • Chair tender co-ordination meetings.
  • Chair pre-start meetings.
  • Re-formatting and transferring digital measurement information onto the Causeway Estimating System.

The key skills and qualities of an Estimator are: Must be able to demonstrate previous experience in a similar role. Good communication and numeracy skills. Honesty and good time keeping.

Causeway or another Estimating software experience desirable, though training can be provided.

Remuneration/Package

  • Holidays – 30 days per year
  • Occupational Sick Pay – 30 working days per year
  • Death in Service Benefit – 1 x normal salary (employee must be enrolled into pension scheme to benefit)
  • Scottish Widows Pension Scheme – the employer will contribute of 5% and the employee must make a minimum contribution of 3% of annual salary
  • Salary/package – dependant on experience up to £45,000
