In accordance with the Administrative and Professional Officer Agreement, this full-time continuing position offers a comprehensive benefits package found on our Benefits Overview page and annual salary range of $70,667 to $117,771.

Department/Position Summary

The University of Alberta is currently seeking a dynamic and experienced professional that understands the business of adult learning for the newly created role of Manager, Continuing Education. Reporting to the Director, Continuing Education, the incumbent will utilize a strong foundation in business and Continuing Education to oversee continuous improvement as well as to develop and monitor HUB processes and procedures as they relate to development, delivery and administration of programing. The Manager will also engage in policy and process development as appropriate and related to non-credit and external partnership offerings.

The Manager, Continuing Education also has an external focus to elevate the University of Alberta’s reputation in Continuing Education through presentations to various key stakeholders as well as at conferences and events, client engagement opportunities, and other external activities that align to unit goals. Internally, the Manager will engage in committees, working groups, and other opportunities that will position and enable the HUB to create awareness of its services and collaborate on Continuing Education initiatives across the institution.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Work with HUB Directors and AVP to establish unit goals as they relate to Continuing Education (CE) delivery and administration.
  • Lead a team that is responsible for the delivery of CE programs and courses to ensure pacing towards unit goals, metrics and targets.
  • Develop and maintain annual business and budget plans for the CE unit.
  • Support the development of a business strategy for Corporate / Contract training and services.
  • Support the development of a performance reporting framework for the unit.
  • Liaise with Information Services and Technology to meet technical and infrastructure requirements of the delivery of CE programming.
  • Work with the Office of the Registrar to support the implementation of appropriate enrolment and reporting processes.
  • Work with Marketing and Communications to ensure timely marketing plans are established and delivered that support the business needs of the unit.
  • Lead the development of a CE focused delivery and Administration guide to create scalable, replicable processes (Standard Operating Procedures) for the HUB; regularly review and update the guide as needed.
  • Establish a framework for the development of new face to face programing.
  • Collaborate closely with Manager of Learning, Business Development Manager, Marketing Specialist and academic/SME on the analysis of new credit / non-credit and external client opportunities to bring forward recommendations to OCE Directors.
  • Contribute to Business and Market analysis / research to evaluate potential trends, market gaps and revenue opportunities.
  • Provide insight, recommendations, and support to the Business Development Manager on submission of RFP responses as required.
  • Engage in professional development to increase and expand job related skills.
  • Research trends, best practices and insights related to management of Continuing Education development, delivery and administration.

To be successful in this position, the incumbent will possess the following skills and experience:

  • University degree at the undergraduate level in a relevant discipline such as business administration – equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
  • Total of 5 to 7 years, comprising progressively senior roles in an education service environment and other relevant experience in progressively senior roles in other sectors outside education;
  • Working knowledge of implementing strategic and business plans including budgeting, setting performance management goals, expectations, and business objectives;
  • Administrative experience in higher education; working knowledge of university processes and procedures;
  • Leadership experience with an emphasis in collegiality, collaboration and openness with demonstrated ability to act decisively and to foster strong relations and a culture of cooperation and respect amount teams, staff, and students;
  • Education and/or experience in equity, diversity, and inclusivity
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal stakeholders to achieve business goals;
  • Collaborative management style in building and sustaining teams and partnerships with astute coaching skills;
  • Ability to conceptualize, develop and operationalize processes with the entire organization in mind
  • Demonstrated strong judgment and leadership in both managerial and educational matters;
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and tight deadlines while working effectively in a team environment;
  • Ability to read and manage perceptions and expectations.
