Locomotive Electricians are responsible for conducting routine maintenance, repair, rebuild, inspect, and install all electrical wiring and equipment on diesel electric locomotives. Employees are expected to demonstrate auditory and visual acuity and tracking while performing inspections. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk long distances, and sit for extended periods of time of time; reach for tools and objects with hands and arms; climb in the back of vehicles; stoop, kneel, or crouch; in all types of weather conditions. The employee must occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
Primary Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
Measure, cut, thread, bend, and assemble connections to control panels and junction boxes
  • Test circuit connections
  • Diagnose, repair, and replace electrical malfunctions in components including loading charging, transition problems, wheel slip, sander circuits and high and low voltage grounds
  • Perform work activities utilizing voltages up to 1200 and amperages up to 1500
  • Examine parts for wear and/or defects such as brushes contact tips, slip rings, armatures, diodes, bearings, and fuses
  • Interpret test instrument indicators
  • Repair speed recorders, air compressors, turbo and fuel pumps and temperature switches. Change light bulbs on locomotives
  • Interpret information from computer monitors or printouts
  • Miscellaneous activities and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • One year experience reading blueprints or electrical schematics
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years electrician experience
  • Completion of an electrical vocational or trade school program
  • Journeyman Electrician

Work Conditions:
Working hours will include shift work over all 3 shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Shifts are assigned/awarded by seniority. The work environment is a shop and outdoor work.
Training:
Locomotive Electricians will undergo 1 week of Mechanical Safety Orientation during their first week of employment and 6 weeks of craft specific training, at the Norfolk Southern Training Center in McDonough, GA. During the training, trainees will be reimbursed for one round-trip and provided lodging and meal cards ($20/day).
Salary and Wages:
  • 1st 40 Days of Training: $18.86 (50% of Full Rate)
  • Next 204 Days of Training: $28.28 (75% of Full Rate)
  • Next 244 Days of Training: $30.16 (80% of Full Rate)
  • 100%/After 2 Years/488 Days: $37.71 (100% of Full Rate – Journeyman)
