GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
The ESDA Collections Photographer is primarily responsible for the programmatic photography of two- and three-dimensional artworks. The ESDA collections photographer is expected to work in a variety of different workspaces and locations including photographing galleries, storerooms, and installations. A collections photographer must be able to meet specific stylistic and technical criteria across a variety of original artworks and materials and reports to the Imaging Department collections imaging manager. As part of a dynamic and collaborative workplace, a collection photographer manages projects and interfaces with peer photographers, curators, conservators, art handlers and other stakeholders. Candidates must be experienced in handling specific categories of artworks in a cultural heritage environment. Photographers must be proficient in digital capture and post-production including relevant technical imaging techniques and standards. They must understand and be accomplished with studio strobe, tungsten, and LED lighting techniques for fine art as well as the ability to follow internal studio capture quality and stylistic guidelines. Photographers are expected to participate in online and in person education and outreach programs. Existing knowledge of 3D and spectral imaging is a plus.
The work is a mixture of sedentary and physical exertion, including time working at a computer, operation of all types of studio equipment, assembly/disassembly/repair of camera and grip equipment. Assignments regularly involve long periods of standing, bending, and stooping to observe and study work operations. Good manual dexterity is required to handle fragile materials.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
  • Proficiency in the creation of high-quality studio photography of works of art in Museum collections, both two-dimensional and three-dimensional object types
  • Proficiency working in gallery photography spaces, installations, and storeroom locations
  • Ability to see photography requests through efficiently from capture to post-production and file management with minimal external support or intervention
  • Ability to maintain schedules across multiple projects
  • Ability to adapt photographic technique to maximize volume for large collections of similar type objects or to efficiently address specific object photography requests.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with imaging management, imaging staff, curators, editors, production staff and other stakeholders
  • Other duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience and Skills:
  • At least five years experience in publication photography
  • Ability to work as part of a highly collaborative diverse team of creative professionals
  • Minimum of five years experience photographing 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional works of art in a museum/gallery/auction house setting
  • Art Handling experience
  • Demonstrable skills in photographic lighting for fine art and specifically the object types of the ESDA collection
  • Computer and imaging experience including color management, ISO standards, measured tethered capture configuration and workflow
  • Proficiency using Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Bridge, Hasselblad Phocus, Helicon Focus, PT Gui
  • Experience in file management including batch file renaming, clipping paths, metadata entry, Image QC.
  • Strong self-motivation and problem-solving skills
Knowledge and Education:
  • A comprehensive knowledge of fine art studio photography and lighting
  • Some background in art history
  • Knowledge of digital imaging and related hardware and software
  • BA in Fine Arts or equivalent field
Compensation Range:
  • Pay Range: $70,000 – $75,000
