Job Description

Purpose:
York International offers programs and services to over 8,000 international students, scholars, and those who have attained permanent residence status within the last five years. The programs and services support the transition to York University and Canada, create resilient and supportive communities to support student success in a welcoming and inclusive environment. Through our work, and in partnership with Faculties, Division of Students as well as other service providers, York International strives to ensure all students have an opportunity to actively participate in university life, find supportive communities and engage in activities that support their personal, academic, and professional goals. Reporting to the Manager, International Student Experience, the International Student Experience Coordinator plays a key role in supporting the growing number of international students at York University. The incumbent is responsible for coordinating programs and events which address the needs of international students. The incumbent will anticipate the needs of international students and be aware of current trends and best practices by conducting research. The incumbent will utilize student development theories to lead initiatives that support the international student prior to their start at York, throughout their student experience, and following the completion of their degree. Under the direction and guidance of the Manager, International Student Experience, the International Student Experience Coordinator will support the hiring and training process for a team of student staff and volunteers. The team will have responsibilities for developing and maintaining engagement and peer mentorship opportunities for students and programs that support the success of international students at York. The International Student Experience Coordinator will support University-wide international student recruitment and retention initiatives in collaboration with key campus partners. The Coordinator actively supports the vision, mission, values and strategic direction of the Division of Students and York University. The incumbent contributes to the University Academic Plan in efforts to increase the international student population at York and provide more robust resources to assist international students and their distinctive needs.Education:
Completion of University degree or an equivalent of four (4) years’ experience (defined as within the last five years) working at York University and performing the same or similar tasks. This education equivalency is in addition to the experiential requirements outlined below.

Experience:
Two (2) to four (4) years related experience working in a post-secondary (College or University preferred) or similar student environment with exposure to event coordination including an understanding of the student life cycle, the post-secondary student experience(s). Some exposure to supervisory experience an asset.

Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including tact and diplomacy to deal with diverse individuals.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to respond to concerns and provide clear information regarding process and procedures.
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills to handle and coordinate multiple events simultaneously.
  • Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, work in a high-volume environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Anticipates trends in client needs and identifies opportunities to proactively respond.
  • Ability to train, mentor and coach.
  • Excellent administrative skills to keep track of program documentation (scheduling, record keeping, filing, maintenance of hard copy/electronic records, minutes, report briefs/summaries, incident reports etc.).
  • Intermediate level for word processing (e.g., Word), spreadsheets (e.g., Excel) and Presentation software (e.g., PowerPoint).
  • Basic understanding of database concepts.
