Senior Environmental Assessment Officer

As part of the Machinery of Government changes announced by the Premier of Victoria, from 1 January 2023, the Department of Jobs Precincts and Regions (DJPR) has been renamed Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions (DJSIR). As part of these changes this position will transfer to the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA).

The position of Senior Environmental Assessment Officer forms a part of the Rural and Regional Victoria Group and Resources Branch. This Branch develops policy, programs and regulation to enable investment and generate jobs through the sustainable development of the State’s earth resources, including extractives, minerals and petroleum.

The Role

The Senior Environmental Assessment Officer primary responsibility is to assess and make recommendations on applications for mining, quarrying, petroleum, geothermal and other earth resources activities across Victoria. The role includes providing technical, regulatory and operational policy guidance to co-regulators, recommending proposed outcomes for complex applications, and monitoring the quality of delivery against service standards and initiating improvements.

The Senior Environmental Assessment Officer will work with other teams across the Department’s Resources Division and other agencies, such as the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, the Environment Protection Authority, local councils, catchment and water authorities, and Heritage Victoria.

About You

  • Demonstrated expertise and experience in assessing applications for regulatory approvals
  • Industry, government or consulting experience in the mining, quarrying or petroleum sector
  • Proven ability to make sound judgments based on evidence
  • Demonstrated experience working with frameworks, standards, systems, processes and controls
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills
