SLC have a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Manager to join our busy Legal Services Department based at our Glasgow, Bothwell Street office on a permanent basis.

The Legal Services department supports all areas of the Student Loans Company Limited (“SLC”). The range and nature of support which can be sought encompasses all matters which require legal advice. By way of example, this includes providing advice in relation commercial contracts and procurement, contracts of employment and general employment law advice, product terms and conditions, interpretation of legislation and policy, freedom of information requests as well as complaints, appeals and litigation.

Following a departmental expansion and re-structure, Legal Services are recruiting to expand the team to meet the needs of the business. Reporting to the Company Secretary, the Senior Manager will be expected to have a particular area of subject matter expertise, they will also be required to provide legal advice on the full suite of legal matters applicable to SLC, both strategic and operational, under the direction of the Company Secretary, thus helping to ensure that SLC operates within its regulatory framework and meets its statutory obligations.

The role currently has line management responsibility for, Legal Services – Litigation and Employment which consists of one solicitor and one senior solicitor.

SLC offer a Blend working model which will typically be 2 days in the office and 3 days from home.

Person specification

  • the successful candidate will hold a degree in Scots Law, a Diploma in Legal Practice and a valid Scottish practising certificate (or the English equivalents) (dual qualification in England & Wales is desirable, not essential);
  • in the region of 10 years’ PQE;
  • be able to evidence experience of litigation, debt recovery and employment and/or advising/revising in relation to interpretation, modification and/or application of statutory guidance, legislation etc;
  • knowledge of Data Protection and FOI legislation;
  • experience of relevant court papers in the context of litigation under Scots law and/or English law in connection with, for example, judicial reviews, money claims, discrimination, personal injury and debt recovery;
  • significant experience of employment law issues;
  • able to work autonomously and/or in accordance with instructions;
  • able to work under pressure and in accordance with tight timescales;
  • appreciative of the requirements of working with confidential information;
  • have excellent written and verbal communication skills which can be tailored as appropriate to reflect the skill set of the recipient;
  • excellent attention to detail and be able to interpret information and summarise it succinctly;
  • have sound awareness of issues in a technology driven business;
  • have well developed communication, presentation and interpersonal skills and able to offer clear and concise expert advice;
  • have the ability to solve complex legal problems in a pragmatic and commercially focussed manner;
  • experience of working with and influencing senior external stakeholders;
  • proven ability to multi-task to deliver in a dynamic environment;
  • the ability to provide clear, consistent, accurate and coherent advice, both verbally and in writing; and
  • a high degree of discretion and professionalism.
